Driving theory test and hazard perception

Before you can advance onto your practical examination and receive your driving licence, you must first pass the DSA driving theory test. This is made up of two sections, one of which tests your understanding of driving theory while the other assesses your hazard perception and awareness of the potential dangers which exist on the road.

DSA driving theory test – multiple choice section

The driving theory test is a computer-based assessment which takes place at various test centres around the country. The multiple choice element is the one which tests your understanding of the theory behind driving and comprises 50 randomly-selected questions.

  • You need to answer 43 questions correctly in order to pass this section of the driving theory test.
  • A 15-minute practice session is available prior to the start of the driving theory test.

The hazard perception element – getting it right

The hazard perception element forms the second section of the driving theory test and must be passed at the same sitting as the multiple-choice section. You will be shown 14 videos, each about a minute long and featuring a type of hazard, such as road conditions, vehicles and pedestrians.

  • There are 15 risks to be identified in the hazard perception test and candidates can score up to 5 points on each hazard.
  • The earlier you spot the developing hazard, the higher you score.
  • The pass mark for the hazard perception test is 44 out of 75.

Taking the driving theory test – further information

Both the multiple choice and hazard perception sections must be completed in 57 minutes and the cost of the driving theory test is £28.50. You must possess a valid provisional driving licence before you can apply to take your theory test.

Waiting times vary, but the DSA have set a target that 95% of candidates should receive an appointment to sit their driving theory test within two weeks of their preferred date. With proper preparation, you should be able to pass both the multiple choice and hazard perception sections without any major problems.
